![]() ![]() The real difference between the two men was in the subject matter of their respective shows. TV was sparse pickings back then and I was an early addict so I watched whatever I could. Hitch was an old British import while Serling was a young all American who looked fit and healthy so it was only natural for us to see it as the young cool guy against that fat old dude. But those two guys were very different in their age, nationality and probably politics. They each used narration, great music and the highest quality production costumes, props and most of all the actors. They each shared the same basic format where the star would appear in the opening and closing segments to help set the atmosphere for the episodes to come. 1960's TV competition was limited because there were not many channels let alone very many shows but that made the battles all the more memorable.īoth shows were on once a week so it was impossible not to compare them and while they did have some similarities they were also different in many ways. ![]() They were the two weird Uncles that were the life of the party compared to all the other uncles. These two guys were like part of the family. Rod Serling was the pinnacle of TV entertainment but Alfred was the most famous movie director and only dabbled in television. Rod Serlingīack in 1960 all TV shows were in black and white and frankly not very sophisticated but there were a few that that rose above the rest and the top two shows as a kid were The Twilight Zone and the Alfred Hitchcock Hour. ![]()
